A Checklist of Tasks for Daily Senior Care

A healthcare worker attending to a senior citizen resident in an assisted living facilityWhether they’re living in an assisted living facility or at home, daily care for seniors involves maintaining a routine that supports their physical and emotional well-being. At Coventry House Assisted Living, we provide a consistent schedule that ensures our residents’ physical, emotional, and social needs are met. This checklist for daily senior care provides a framework for essential tasks and activities that promote dignity and enhance quality of life.

Morning Routine

Wake-Up and Personal Hygiene

Typically, we start the day by gently waking residents and assisting with personal hygiene tasks such as:

  • Brushing teeth or cleaning dentures
  • Washing the face and hands or bathing
  • Brushing hair
  • Shaving or applying makeup, if desired
  • Using the toilet or managing incontinence care

Depending on a resident’s specific needs, bathing may not be needed every day, but basic hygiene and grooming should always be a part of daily care for seniors. Our caregivers encourage residents to perform these tasks independently as often as possible. For those who need help, we ensure assistance is provided with dignity and privacy.

Dressing

Our assisted living residents are encouraged to select their own outfits to maintain a sense of autonomy. Caregivers may help them choose comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. When needed, we also provide assistance with dressing to ensure their comfort and safety.

Morning Medications

Timely and accurate medication administration is vital. Our staff ensures that medications are dispensed correctly and on time, and all medication management protocols are strictly followed.

Breakfast and Hydration

Starting with a healthy, balanced breakfast helps set a positive tone for the day. Nutritional needs and dietary restrictions vary, so meals and food offerings are tailored to meet our residents’ individual health requirements. Hydration is also essential, so we encourage residents to drink water or juice with meals. Staff may monitor food and liquid intake for some residents.

Midday and Afternoon Care for Seniors

Social Activities and Engagement

Emotional, social, and cognitive stimulation are vital elements of daily senior care. Our residents in both assisted and independent living enjoy engaging activities and amenities such as:

  • Board games
  • Arts and crafts
  • Music therapy
  • Exercise classes
  • Book clubs and discussions
  • Movies
  • Outings

Even short social interactions and activities can significantly boost mood and cognitive function.

Lunch and Snacks

We serve delicious, nutritious lunches that keep our residents’ dietary needs and preferences in mind. Our caregivers keep an eye on residents to see if they notice changes in appetite or difficulty chewing or swallowing, which may be addressed by skilled nursing staff or other health care providers in our assisted living facility. We also offer light snacks such as fruit, crackers, or yogurt, and encourage fluid intake throughout the day.

Toileting

Taking restroom breaks throughout the day helps our residents stay comfortable and confident.

Mobility Support

For those who need mobility assistance we may take walks or perform exercises that promote balance.

Rest Periods

Many of our residents enjoy taking some quiet time in the afternoon. Whether they nap or settle in with a good book, downtime is vital for physical and emotional wellness.

Evening and Bedtime Routines

Communication with Loved Ones

Connection with family and friends is vital to seniors’ mental and emotional health. We encourage our residents to keep in touch with loved ones through phone calls or video chats.

Dinner and Medications

Dinner is served and evening medications are administered. As always, our caregivers observe to see if there are any changes in residents’ behavior, eating habits, and overall health and wellness.

Nighttime Hygiene and Bedtime Routine

We help residents prepare for bed by supporting routines like:

  • Brushing teeth or cleaning dentures
  • Washing up
  • Changing into pajamas
  • Using the bathroom

Some of our residents enjoy soft music, lighting, or a cup of tea to wind down for the day. Our caregivers always ensure that our residents’ rooms and apartments are safe, comfortable and secure. We also document things like frequency and dosage of medications given, food and beverage intake, toilet use, and emotional and physical condition.

Following a routine for daily senior care and tracking any changes in health, behavior or mood makes it easier for our team and residents’ loved ones to work together and provide the best care possible.
